After consultation with the staff and students of the
University of Jaffna, a fund had been established for the
memory of Professor S. Kandiah of the University of Jaffna.
The primary purpose of this fund is to provide financial
support for students/staff at the University of Jaffna to
conduct research related to
the local community. The fund will provide
scholarships in the form of stipends, similar to the
research assistantships given to the graduate students in
the U.S/ Canadian universities.
This fund has been set up in a way that the principal
will be invested in
the United States, and only the revenues generated will be used to
provide the financial support.
This mechanism ensures continued funding for a long period of time in the future.
The present situation in the North-East and the consequent pain
and sorrow the people are undergoing are
beyond description. Under these circumstances providing
money to the university for research may seem not
appropriate. There may be urgent needs to be addressed
in the North-East. However, in view of a long-term perspective,
we believe that we have to look beyond the present
situation and into the future,
and build a stronger foundation for research at the
university that will eventually be beneficial to the society. We
beleive that the present situation in Jaffna will improve in the
future, and this fund will be a valuable asset to the University
and the community, at that time.
Your comments and constructive criticisms are very much appreciated.

Our mission
is to create a community of
scholars and learners that will provide
an environment for the scientific minds to generate scientific knowledge to
educate new cadres of scientist and scientifically literate citizens, and to
contribute to the common good through community out reach.
Specific Aims
The amount of stipend to the student will be equal to the
salary of an Assistant lecturer at the University of Jaffna.
Staff at the University of Jaffna are encouraged to submit
research proposals for funding.Proposals will be accepted annualy
and the fund will provide support for at least one project every
year. Renewal of funding for a single research project is possible upto a
three year period.
A committee, comprised of experienced scientists,
both in Sri Lanka and abroad, will select the projects for funding.
The research should be focused on addressing issues related
and important to the local community. Preference will be given
for inter-institutional collaborative projects involving external organizations
(e.g., Department of Agriculture).
Progress of the funded projects will be monitored by periodic
reports from the recipient. Publication / presentation of the
results at external meetings will be encouraged.
Advantages
Long term project.
Since only the gains from the capital invested will be
used to provide awards, it is hoped that, the scholarships
can be awarded for a long period.
and to support research at the
university for many years into the future.
Rather than being another teaching institution, we believe that the university
should play a significant role in developing research
programs related to the local community.
Once the active research programs are started, it will
be easier to get involved in collaborative projects
(also external funds).
